Roto Zip recalls 1.9 million handheld saws for safety problem
– The Associated Press
WASHINGTON (February 26, 2002 11:51 a.m. EST) – Roto Zip Tool Corp. is recalling about 1.9 million handheld saws because their handles can come off, causing the operator to be cut.
The Cross Plains, Wis., company has received 360 reports of loose or separating handles and 19 reports of injuries, including some requiring stitches, the Consumer Product Safety Commission said Tuesday.
The brand name and “ROTOZIP SPIRAL SAW” are written on the side of the mostly black or red tools. The recall includes three models of Spiral Saw™ power tools: Revolution with serial numbers 01 through 1,145,000; Rebel with numbers 01 through 415,000; and Solaris with numbers 01 through 270,000.
Stores and television infomercials sold these saws from December 1999 through January 2002 for between $50 and $190.
The government said if there is a loose fit between the handle and the tool body consumers should remove the handle and contact the company for a replacement by calling toll-free at 1-800-920-1467 between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. CST.

WASHINGTON (February 26, 2002 11:49 a.m. EST) – A New Jersey company is recalling about 458,000 portable air compressors because internal corrosion could cause them to burst open, releasing dangerous pressurized air.
Ingersoll-Rand Co., of Woodcliff Lake, has received 11 reports of the air tanks failing, the Consumer Product Safety Commission said Tuesday. No injuries have been reported.
The recalled portable compressors have electric motors or gasoline engines with tank sizes up to 30 gallons. The compressors were marketed under various brand names, including Ajax, Charge Air Pro, Energair, Guardian Power, MacTool, Power Force, Rallye, Rand 4000 and Steel Driver.
Model and serial numbers are on a plate or sticker on the outside housing. On some oil-less models, the numbers are on an internal floor baffle beneath a plastic cabinet.
The compressors have serial numbers beginning with the prefix “C” or “DC.” The model numbers begin with the following prefixes: 1B, 1D, 1E, 1I, 2B, 2D, 2E, 3B, 3D, 3E, 4B, 4E, 5E, 5G, 15E, 23HP, 75, 75E, 250E, AB, AIR, AJ, C, CAP, CB, CL, CO, CP, CR, CS, CT, EA, GC, GP, HP, HPC, IR, IRC, LTD, MT, OI, PF, RA, RL, RP, RY, SC, SDS, SE, THP and WB.
Hardware and construction supply stores sold the air compressors from 1983 through 1991 for between $150 and $400.
The government said consumers should stop using the air compressors. For return and refund information, consumers can contact Ingersoll-Rand toll-free at 1-877-552-2952 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. EST Monday through Friday.
