I want to build a 4′ high x 8″ thick privacy wall for a patio. The wall will have 2’x2′ columns spaced 6′ apart, and a bit more than 4′ high. Each column is wrapped in manufactured stone and capped at the top. My inclination is to build the wall and the columns with CMUs, and parge (stucco) the wall. The wall is capped in stone. The CMU’s will rest on a footer that reaches below the frost line (here in IL). Vertical rebars and core grouting provide stiffness. Horizontal wire between layers of CMU provide further stability.
My son asked me why I would not consider a framed (wood) wall, sheathed and covered with cement-based backer board, and then stuccoed. I replied that such a wall, made of treated lumber, would be subject to expansion/contraction movements. The stucco finish might crack. Furthermore, the (treated) lumber is permanently encased and would trap any moisture that might ever get inside.
Which is the better, more stable and long-term construction method? What are the pros and cons of each?
Thanks for your input.

You might also consider steel studs for framing, though of course it will eventually rust out in 30-40 years.
And, of course, check codes, to make sure the wall is meeting any setback restrictions.
I'd go with your inclination
IMO, your initial inclination will last longer and most likley look better over time. It will also cost more.
The P.T., if rated for ground contact, doesn't really care about trapped moisture for about 20 years. After that all bets are off. The biggest issue I see I see for the framed and sheathed wall is having to fasten your framing and cement board with stainless steel fasteners. Corrosion from contact with damp P.T. and cement board will eat any other fasteners alive from the get go. Lastly, the idea of hanging a skin of cementious material and setting stone capping on a wood landscaping wall just seems like a short term, cost cutting solution and generally a bad idea.
I'd go with your inclination
