running a new dryer leg. want to use 3 wire w/ ground. pretty sure existing plug on dryer is 3 prong. What to do w/ extra wire? Tie in w/ ground? Nut it off? Replace existing pigtail on dryer to 4 wire? Do want to use 4 wire so when replace dryer, can upgrade to new code.
Thanks

You can add a 4 wire pigtail to the current dryer. There will probably be a ground terminal in the area where the pigtail terminates, unused at the point but available if you want to connect to it. Check that first.
You need to replace the pigtail on the dryer.
If you are in luck the paper label is still on the back that give the full instructions.
Typcially you will have a terminal block with 3 terminals. 2 hots and neutral. Then you will eitehr have a 4 terminal on the block for the ground or a ground screw or stud near by.
When used in a 3 wire connection a jumper strap or a wire goes between the neutral terminal and the ground terminal.
When using the 4 wire connection remove the strap/jumper and connect the 4 wires from the pigtail to their respective terminals.
Most (some?) of the dryer manufactures now have instructions on the internet for their variuous models - it is pretty straight forward in most cases.

Replace the existing pigtail with a 4-wire one. If the dryer is less than 35 years old there is almost certainly a terminal and jumper to accomplish this.
