If you are going to be inspected and have to meet codes, you'll need a continuous rail.
Beat it to fit / Paint it to match

I wouldn't be surprised if it depends, to a degree, on the size of the landing.
We are like tenant farmers chopping down the fence around our house for fuel when we should be using Nature's inexhaustible sources of energy -- sun, wind and tide. ... I'd put my money on the sun and solar energy. What a source of power! I hope we don't have to wait until oil and coal run out before we tackle that. --Thomas Edison

Codes do vary, depending on location. According to many, the requirement that a handrail be continuous, includes the understanding that its continuous through the flight of stairs. The flight of stairs (in your case a run of 6 treads) ends at the landing, and at that point, another flight begins. I have changed the sides of rail at a landing with no trouble from inspectors.
