blocking between subfloor and girders/foundation walls
we are in the process of removing a load-bearing partition and replacing it with a recessed beam. our home is built on a concrete block foundation with doubled 2×6 girders atop piers (3 sets across the width of the house, spaced about 8’0 apart). the floor joists are 2×8.
we are lining up the new attic beams and their “posts” to be over a set of the piers. I understand the need to transfer load fully to the foundation, just want to get some advice on how to put in the blocking underneath. The blocking will be between the subfloor and the girder on one end and between the bottom plate and the sole plate on the foundation wall at the other end. What’s throwing me is seeing the existing horizontal blocking between the concrete piers and the girders above them, but then seeing online depictions of blocking that appears to be set on the vertical between floor joists. I like the way putting it vertically appears, but is that not as strong? Which is the best, vertical or horizontal, for this particular application?
thanks in advance for any responses.
