I was wondering what methods of install others use for installing basic prefabricated box newels. I am installing on stairs, a landing and around the top of the stair well. I have access to the under side of some of the mounting locations – others have post and beam framing under them.
Thanks for any info.

What type of stairway do you have? is there a volute on the bottom step? Is this a winder staircase? more info is needed.

Straight stairs no volute. Rail is post to post. There is a split landing with one riser placed perpendicular to the stairs. The steps continue up rom the landing 180 degree from the first run of steps. the posts are 5" square.
If I understand correctly, these are built-up newels, that is-- basically a hollow box?
If so, this is a method I came up with on a recent job. (I built my own newels):
Cut a block of solid or built-up wood to fit snugly inside the newel. This should be square or taller. Taller is better.
Drill a hole vertically through the block near the center (adjust position to allow the lag bolt you will insert to screw into the center of the joist below.
Use a washer and a metal plate under the head of the lag. Glue and bolt it down.
Slip the newel over the block, adjust and glue and screw the newel to the block. I used matching plugs to cover the screws in the varnished job I just finished.
