Building some replacement sashes – looking for wood recommendation
Howdy;
I’ve got about 4 lower sashes to build, and will be duplicating some existing sashes. I can’t figure out what wood was used in the originals, but they’re about 115 years old and in suprisingly good shape. I’ll be priming & painting the finished sashes, but I’m looking for advice on the right type of wood to use. I believe I read “cypress” some place, but wasn’t sure.
Any consensus on a decent wood? I assume it matters somewhat , but everything will be primed and all exposed faces will be painted. I’ll be using mortise & tenon construction with pegged rails & stiles. Only one muntin, and it will be mortised into the top & lower rail (just duplicating what the existing ones are).
Cypress? Ash? Oak? I’m not looking for fancy, but straight and somewhat rot resistant would be nice. =)
