I have a ceiling with 24 OC trusses. The ceiling was covered with 1/2 inch drywall. It was fastened with screws every 12″ along the edge and field. My question is will this eventually sag? Should they have used 5/8″ drywall? I have read some books that say 5/8 is best but 1/2 is fine. Who is correct ? Could someone please give me a little help.

Rule of thumb for ceilings 24" o.c. is 5/8", also should be fire-rated. 12" screw spacing in the field is fine, altho 6" is more like it for the seams. There may be some sag with the 1/2", oblique light angles may make it visible; also, use dead flat paint on the ceiling, white or light colors.
