I have recently built a deck that incorporates my metal bulkhead. I would now like to remove the bulkhead and construct a flat access door to the basement stairs. The measurement from the framing to the top of the pre-cast basement stair unit is approx. 6″ and the area is approx 4′ X 5′. This access door will have decking over the top of it so that it looks like the rest of the deck. Obviously the problem lies in making this panel strong enough to support the loads above, light enough to open and close, waterproof and less than 5″ in total thickness (5″ + 5/4″ decking). Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
