Garage construction - how much is needed?

C1802362's picture

I'm getting ready to build a detached 2 bay, 1-1/2 story 24' W x 30' deep garage. The construction will be 2x6 framing, with clear span 24' joists. The floor above the garage will be for general storage

What's the view about housewrapping a structure that isn't planned to be heated or otherwise climate controlled? Same question about insulation (I will probably sheath the interior walls to appease my wife).

Where do you live?  If it's somewhere where you can get nasty winter weather then keeping the wind out is useful.

Hi Art,

I can't think of any good reason not to use housewrap under the siding...   However, don't bother using any of the cheap plastic housewrap that the lumber yards sell cheap for free edvertising (the company's name will be emblazoned all over it).  It serves no other purpose.  15# felt paper is very cheap and very effective.  Housewrap and felt are important not just for insulated buildings.  Most sidings take on moisture and dry to both sides..   you don't want your sheathing sucking that moisture up and deteriorating.  Obviously, a vented rain screen is the best way, but maybe outside your planned budget.

Felt doesn't keep the wind (post #216028, reply #4 of 5)

Felt doesn't keep the wind out like a proper Tyvek wrap does.

There are plenty of newer (post #216028, reply #5 of 5)

There are plenty of newer products beyond Tyvek that incorporate rainscreen ideas for drying of the backside of siding/shingle. It all depends on what you are using the garage for. For cars and storage I would just use felt. If it's going to be a workshop then insualte the walls and install a better housewrap...
