insulating a flat or cathedral ceiling
back a couple weks ago i made a post about insulating a flat roof area i have ,well i took several of the ideas and this is what i came up with.i have noticed several other similar post so thought i post this and see if it can help . first i have a 32×16 flat roof framed with 2×12’s with a 8″per 12′ slope. my first choice would of been foam. bid was 650,for 3″=r-13. i just wasn’t comfortable with that r-13 so started looking for something different. everyone here thought cellouse was much better than fiberglass ,so thats what i went with. i started with installing a vapor barrier and then hung 2 rows of sheetrock. then blew in cellouse till cavity was full, hung another 4′,blew again. the last 4′ i left just the vapor barrier by itself and pulled the end down and blew it-what a pain in the…. . anyway all said and done blew 48 bags at 6.50 a bag=310.00 and probably average about a r-60 by the time it went down into the coffer clg. heres a few things i learned: first set up a remote switch on your ladder so you can switch off and on without yelling at your buddy every 2 mins.,, if i was doing it again i would have started hanging the rock on the inside wall and finshed at the outside edge. i would remove the fascia bord covering the rafter tails and blown straight in instead of screwing around at the other end. this would of been alot more fun if it would’ve been 102 with 40% humidity. i think i achieved a r-10 on top of my head. overall i’m pretty happy with what i spent, for the r value i’ve got, although i still think it should have been vented!! even though the cellouse web site said it didn’t need it.also for a cathedral clg i think you could blow maybe 3 sheets at a time {12′] anyway thanks for the input. larry
