non-metallic electrical box for outlet on ceiling – joists are not perfectly plumb
Hi Everyone:
I am attaching a non-metallic one-gang old work outlet box to the bottom edge of my joist in my basement. I will be using it for an outlet for my projector. However, the joist is not plumb so when the part of the box with the screws is level to the bottom of the joist, the box is not right up against the side of the joist. It’s not far from plumb but it’s not as good as it should be. I’m using the following box:

any advice on how to resolve this other than removing it and trying to find another location (i’ve checked the two adjacent joists and they are about the same amount out of plumb as the current joist). The house was built in the 1950s.
Thanks!

Sister a short (eg,1 foot) piece of 2x to the joist. Shim between the joist and the sister to make the sister level and plumb. Be sure to fasten with screws so it won't work loose when things are plugged/unplugged a few thousand times.
Why is that important?
Flatten the face of the joist
Take out your trusty 3/4" chisel and level the face of the joist where the box is nailed. These boxes always cause bulges in drywall anyway...recessing it a bit could only help.
