Prepping for a tile backsplash (post #97871)

I am preparing to install a ceramic tile backsplash in my kitchen. It will be 4 or 5 rows of tile high, about 16". There is currently only painted drywall, no existing backsplash. I intend to lay down cement backer board first. Do I need to remove the existing drywall and attach the backer board directly to the studs or can it be installed over the drywall? I don't mind the extra buildup of thickness, it is actually desirable since I intend to finish the edges of the tile backsplash with quarter rounds.

Install 1/2" Hardiboard over the drywall.  Just make sure you find studs to nail thru to secure Hardi.  Leave Hardi a little less than 3/4" from edge where you want to finish off with qtr round.  Also don't worry about getting Hardi tight to countertop or at top under the upper cabinets.

I just did that.I used 1/4" Hardie.....no biggie.
Deal with the edges with whatever you want to with.Its all just a matter of taste there. Theres fifty ways to leave your lover.....I mean the edges.

For a backsplash, which is not likely to see much water, you don't really even need cement backer.  You can just install the tile directly on the drywall with mastic.  However, if you NEED the extra thickness, then you may as well add thickness with cement backer.

Oh yeah.  I guess they figured out what they'll be doing with that backsplash by now.

That was pretty well disguised spam.  It almost looked like real meat.

The wording isn't quite as clumsy as some other spams recently, but I suspected immediately, and the age of the thread confirmed it.
