raising Cape roof with hinge and jacks
Years ago I read of a method to create a shed dormer in a Cape by hinging the existing roof at he ridge and jacking the roof at the eaves. I have not been able to find anything recent on this. Does anyone have experience with this?
Thanks

Does anyone have experience with this? (and is willing to admit it)
Well for sure there was an article in The Journal of Light Construction about this 6,7, maybe 8 years ago. The final photo showed the view out the window under the newly hinged roof section and it was snowing to beat the band. Really punctuated WHY a person might choose to do that instead of tearing off and completely reframing.
I bet if you search the JLC archives you could find that article online by now.
I once reframed the existing ceiling joist system in a small house in preperation for adding a second level without removing the roof first for similar reasons. Nothing wrong with it, but it sure takes more work.
I remember that article as well. I think it's a niche idea but I can think of a lot of instances where it could work out well.
I've framed and sheatheed entire trussed roofs on the ground and lifted them into place so I don't see a problem with th emechanics of it.
Yeah, lots of ways to get from point A to point B. That's one of the things I like best about our profession - significant parts both art and science. Would have been a very long career if there had always been "the right way".
