One year old, cherry hardwood floor has grooves [dents] from rolling heavy objects on the floor. I am seeking advice on strategies to repair damaged areas.

As far as "hardwood flooring"
As far as "hardwood flooring" goes cherry is actually quite soft. At least real domestic cherry is. Birch, maple, oak, beech, walnut are all significantly harder than cherry and therefore more dent resistant. I've seen many new floors destroyed when a refrigerator is rolled across it without anything protecting it. The only way to fix it is to sand that area of the floor down to bare wood removing the dents and refinish. Whether the small area alone can be sanded and refinished or you need to sand and finish the whole room will depend on the age and condition of the floor's finish and how skilled the floor guy is.

Thanks for getting back to me. The floor is two years old...with three thick coats of minwax polyurethane. Yes, refrigerator, wife's ab roller, and her rocker. In addition, a dolly was used to move 6' marble top cabine over blankets. I sanded to bottom of groove...just above wood surface, and then applied three coats of finish; however, line shows under new finish. I'm thinking a person with a real specialty skill may be needed.
i have done the same and my floor is oak, nothing really worked out much and ended up putting a carpet on top
Patina
At this point, I'd live with it and call the marks "character" or "patina".

In most areas where damage occurred...people were not aware they were damaging floor. We are finding out cherry makes for a beautiful floor but much softer then maple and oak. The wood is 3/4" solid cherry, specially harvested, dried, and milled for us. I used satin minwax polyurethane to finish this floor. Floor consists of all heartwood. Patenia and finish shean creates a warm appearence.
