retro-footing for interior brick wall
I am in proces of restoring an 1820 Antique. I would like to use some of the brick on site to create a 10′ x 9′ wall in the kitchen. The wall is an exterior gable wall. The sill sits on about 18″ of brick on dirt. The kitchen is currently gutted with the floorboards still in tact.
My question is this: what size footing would I need to create to support a wall (one course thick) of these dimensions? Given that I only have dirt below (inside the existing foundation of bricks), is it even possible to achieve this? My only thought was if I moved the rim joist in from the gable a bit and cut the floor boards back, I might be able to create a small shelf. Would this need to be an actual footing (below frost line) in which case I dont’ think it’s possible, OR, could I use block or even a piece of steel or angle iron of some kind?
Thanks in advance for any thoughts on this. First time posting 🙂
