Sand textured walls
I've removed and rocked over a door opening in a 1940's home. After finishing the patch I skim coating the wall, corner to corner. The wall is smooth matching the patch. How is the best way to get a Sand finish on the wall?

Texture Additive (post #192866, reply #1 of 3)
You can buy a texture additive at most paint stores. Zinsser makes one called Roll-a-tex. It comes in at least 2 "grits" depending on the desired results. It does take a bit of trial and error to match an existing texture and it needs to be rolled on because brushing just tends to push the texture additive around.
But it doesn't sound like you need to match an existing texture finish so why do you want a textured finish?
Sounds like a wall my family (post #192866, reply #2 of 3)
Sounds like a wall my family did when I was young. Not sure how they did it. I assumed, simply mix some clean sand w/ the paint. It wasn't very nice since over time, it is a major dust/dirt collector and it isn't nice to the touch ... just like course sandpaper.
There ain't NO free lunch. Not no how, not no where!
The "good stuff" has slightly (post #192866, reply #3 of 3)
The "good stuff" has slightly rounded particles, and you put it in a fairly heavy paint, so that it shouldn't have a sandpaper feel.
