I spliced a PVC section into the cast iron waste pipe for a new fixture. Do I need to do anything to the exposed ends of the pipe (like prime them), or will the rust that forms be the pipe’s own protection?

You cut the cast iron and spliced in a section of pvc with Fernco, or similar, fitting?
If that is what you did, then you need do nothing else.
