Hello –
I’m replacing an outdoor stair tread that will be painted. The original tread was nailed, but over time either shrank or somehow worked the nails loose. The step then became noisy and loose feeling.
I’ve read a few threads here that mentioned using screws on the risers, but not on treads. My goal is to not have to re-nail the step every other year, but am unsure if deck screws are a solution to this.
Thanks for any input from you pros!
Chris

Use screws or lag bolts through cleats from the bottom.
