Hello All, My wife and I just bought our first house. It’s in San Francisco and consequently have no money left for remodelling. The kitchen floor is filthy; beyond cleaning. It is also hideous yellow sheet vinyl perhaps 15 years old. We plan to gut the kitchen in a year, so I don’t want to put much time or effort into a floor now.
Has anyone have any suggestions on how to prep the existing vinyl for new vinyl tiles; 12 x 12 self adhesive (or glue down). Scouring powder? TSP? Lacquer thinner? Acetone? Alcohol? Belt sander?(Don’t worry, it’s not old enough to be asbestos backed).
Thanks for your time, Bill

I'd try the TSP and rinse

My advice would be don't put any time or effort into it. A guy I know - yeah, that's it, a friend of a friend - told me a filthy kitchen floor works just fine. Maybe even better, since you don't spend any time sweeping and mopping it.
