Hey guys,
Have a project with an exterior double 2 x 12 beam. Need to wrap it with something and not sure if there is anything besides what I have always used like ripped plywood or 1 x cedar. Customer wantsa smooth finish so was thinking about 1 x pine but those wide boards always cup.
Wanted to use a pvc or similar product but can’t find any in 1 x 12 dimension.
Any other ideas?
Thanks
Mike

Why can't you find any 1x12 pvc? I went through probably 100-18'ers last year. Maybe I used it all up. It's out there.
Every place around here tells me its special order and there are minimums. And I only need about 3-4 pcs.
I knew it existed just can't find any.
Medex plywood.

You can also just relief-cut the back of the pine to reduce cupping.
If you relief cut don't you find the board then just splits at the relief? If not, how deep is your relief?
For 3/4" stock, I cut in about 1/4". I've not had a board split, but I've always started with relatively flat stock. I use the relief-cut to help prevent future cupping, not to flatten a board that's already cupped. Solid backing for nailing, bit of glue here and there, should be fine. I've also taken apart similar detail that had been there for years.
MDO plywood with an edge? It might not be too bad to paint if it is directly under a roof. There are companies that make 4x8 sheets of 1/4 and 1/2" PVC like material that could be ripped, but I don't know about fastening and possible waves.
If you're going to paint it, I would also vote for 1/2" MDO. And, it is probably both the cheapest and best alternative for what you're doing.
for the exposed edges, you could glue/nail a 1/8" strip of pine; but you can also get a passable paint surface if you are willing to use an exterior spackle and then sand it.
Around here, all of the builder yards stock it, and you can special order it from Menards.
