Here is an example of how not to install a ledger to a house.
All the vents were blocked and there was no flashing installed.

By considering things like energy-efficient mechanicals, window orientation, and renewable energy sources, homes can be evaluated to meet the energy codes. Here's what the IRC has to say.

Apparently the dryer vent was in the way so they just took it off.
Great place for critters to keep warm. If you look close you can see they made there way into the crawl space.
Venting a dryer under a ground level deck is great for trapping condensation.

This is what happens to cedar when they load ACQ lumber on top

Nice photo essay, Bob. You should write a book. I'm doing a deck now-free standing-and to be honest, they're not my favorite project. Lots of work, so I appreciate your end product, looks nice. As always.
Love those screws, BTW. I replaced a set of deck stairs today and used the screws with my new Panasonic impact driver. Sweet.
I never met a tool I didn't like!
Bravo Bob, on another great looking and finely built deck. I always look forward to seeing pictures of your work. I applaud your attention to detail and diligence in adhering to proper building techniques. I built 8 decks or porches myself last year and have built 3 this year with 4 more booked. Not many are the caliber of your work, but we all need something to strive for right?
Keep up the great work and keep the pictures coming!
Bob, thanks for sharing those pictures, that's an awesome deck.
That is some pretty lumber, It looks to be a full 2" if not at least 1 3/4"
What kind is it and is it pressure treated?
what does one of those babies cost?
Wow, Bob, that is a sweet deck....so you are as good as they say you are!
Is that ALL cedar?
Here in michigan I can never find cedar that looks that good. I usually end up sacraficing and using mediocre or only "slightly" damaged boards. Then for finishes I go to the lumberyard and spend half a day sorting through wood for something decent.
Is there a secret to getting good lumber?
gk
Thanks Gabe, the secret to getting half decent looking lumber is finding a mill to re-saw it for you.
We take a lot for granted here on the West coast.
Thanks for following along..............."Rather be a hammer than a nail"

Thanks Butch, the Pergola is built out of re-sawn 3"X 8" TK cedar $5.75 per foot."Rather be a hammer than a nail"

Beautiful as always Bob
Having the wall plate knotched to accept the pergola rafters is absolutely brilliant.Gord

serious question: is that hardie plank? it looks very uniform.
I like Hardie stuff - no rot twist flake pop termites etc
Actually, No, the siding is first generation LP siding. Although Hardi plank is durable and for life, I would still cut it back and flash it to eliminate a water trap for the Cedar. "Rather be a hammer than a nail"

Pro,
What are you doing, condos? It looks like there is a deck over the one you are building judging by the post.
What are those timbers lying in the groouond beneath th eold and new deck.
Nice work, it's always good to see work done by someone who actually cares about the outcome.
Eric
No, the posts are for a pergola. Here is a shot of the completed Pergola....."Rather be a hammer than a nail"
