My son and I are building a small house in Ausin, TX and he is planning on installing some #2 YP material as plank paneling for interior wall and ceiling coverage in a few rooms. We’re on a tight budget and don’t want to spend the extra money required to buy this material with tongue and groove edges from the factory. We have tongue and grooved some of this material before (for exterior use) with a moulding blade on my table saw but don’t really want to take the time necessary to do this. I’d like to get some opinions from the breaktime members as to any experience they have had with installing this material on walls and ceiling without tongue and groove joints? It will all be installed in conditioned space but I’m a little worried about shrinkage creating cracks between the boards and possible cupping of the boards at a later date. It will be attached to framing members with a 15 ga finish gun. Any advice would be appreciated!

Easy there bubba..just saw a kerf wide (1/8" mol) and rip some splines from the same stock..prestain or paint the splines.
Works just fine.

Ahh who knows, I get the impression, I offended him witha friendly howdy..Splines are fast an easy..not near as much tearout as making a T&G, but hey..what do I know?

No No No, He said he and his son where building in Austin. Didn't say what part of town.
In Austin(which thank god is different than the rest of TX) north Austin people think of south Austin people as bubbas.
That's all just what I gather from the boys at work. Hell I've been here less than you have been in KY.
Where I'm from their all bubbas! :)
With my limited Tx lingo knowledge I think bubba is just another word for redneck. Cap'n would be better for the interpretation thing.
Doug
Naw, it's a term of "endearment"..y'all gotta QUALIFY to be a Bubba..Bubba= good ol friend..at least where I am coming from.See, a 'redneck' is a GOOD thing..otherwise ya been in the "shade" too long , I.E> don't work, don't hunt. One of them "kept men" PW'd or welfare..same thing huh?Either way, he mighta bolted from the intense education he didn't want..lolDuh, options are: T&G, Shiplap, Splines..or worse, nothing.
Would you agree, splines are the quickest and easiest or not?Oh wait, YOU said Shiplap..OK, that's agood way too..{G}

Yea, the only reason I mentioned ship lap is its about as fast as anything but better than nothing.
And I think nothing will be a problem down the road.
Usually the names that I here others called around here arnt as nice as redneck or bubba, usually a bit more derogatory in nature!
Damn, I'm getting hungry, dinner better be done soon or I'm just gonna eat some pumpkin pie.

I think your going to have problems.
Even in conditioned spaces the boards are going to expand and contract.
How wide of boards are you talking about?
You mention the tight budget but how much is it going to cost to run a router bit that will rabbit out the edge and ship lap the wood. At least when the wood shrinks you wont see the sheetrock between them. You could also do it with a table saw and dado blade.
I would guess I could run a router over a couple rooms worth of wood in a few hours.
