Insulating attic no vents

cajun's picture

I will be building a new home next year in south Louisiana and read the other day about spraying insulation on the inside of the roof decking and sealing the attic so that all roof and soffit vents will be eliminate. The insulation contractor claims that the attic will stay around 88 °F. Louisiana summer are very hot and the humidity stays around 85 to 95 %.  Is this a good idea? I always heard that there should be vents in the roof and soffit to help control the temperature in the attic.

any ideas on this subject would help greatly. Thanks in advance.

It's known as a "hot roof".  (post #192501, reply #1 of 5)

It's known as a "hot roof".  It's definitely legit, though whoever plans it needs to know what he's doing.  Basically the attic is made a part of the house, vs being "outside" like a vented attic.

I assume that you've found that if you Google "hot roof" (with the quotes) then you find plenty of reading material (and probably a little porn as well).

Yes, I have found a lot of reading material on the subject and I thinking really hard of going with a "hot roof" on the new house.

Thanks again

Yeah, I think "hot roof' is a (post #192501, reply #5 of 5)

Yeah, I think "hot roof' is a good idea, if done correctly.  Lots of ways to screw it up, of course, especially since many builders are unfamiliar with the concept.
