i posted a message sometime ago and figure i’d try again. that i’m looking 24″ cypress shingles tapered from no more than an 1/8″ w/ butt 9/16″ – 11/16″. i’ve discovered the old ones we’re made south- east corner of north carolina a place called lake waccamaw about a hundred years ago each shingle was no more than 7 3/4″ wide and we’re split with a froe i believe . this a preliminary search, my customers will need dozens of square’s to start. but that of course depends on price and how long to deliver…..thank you for any help or diection…..staywell bear

Bear, you can buy 'em if ya want new growth( 8-15 growth rings/inch and sawn not 'hand split'. But if ya want the"real McCoy" for hist. renovation , you'll need old growth ( 30-40 growth rings/inch). They call 'em 'sinkers' down south salvaged from river bottoms and such. Making them with a froe and beatle(mallet) ain't hard but it gets REAL BORING. We've made better than 100,000 or so for histoic sites. including the entire roof (54,000 ) for George Washington ' s Mount Vernon in Va.The first 1,000 or so are kinda fun because you're doing it the ol' fashion way, etc. But by 8-10,000 your wrists & elbows start to hurt from the froe and mallet. Then your back from the drawknife & shaving hourse. But the real trick is picking out the right logs the better the log the eaiser AND better the shingle/shake . But... as to the cost ( better sit down hard with a stiff shot of something in your hand ) as i said before making isn't hard but it is labor intensive which also means getting started well in advance of the need. Plus the logs are NOT cheap . The price goes with market demand. But if you're serious , let me know and I'll dig up the info on old growth cypress shingles-- like log suppliers, yeild per ton , etc the company name is Quality Wood Chips and we specilize in true historic restoration. If you have the labor force I could teach your crew how to and pick out the logs for you . Any case Good Luck !! Bill d. QWC
bill-thanks for your time, i kinda knew they we're going to be very expensive .if you could just give me a ball park figure for the handsplit, and also if you have it on hand a price for the sawn ,if not a bead on where i could get phone number. any and all information ( they are very big on having things documented) i could present to the customer would be much appreciated. and in return i'll try to give you the business. if they go with either or thanks bill for your time and happy new year.......stay well.... bear

just did a search with an e-mail to you. thank 's for any help...bear
You may want to get rid of the trailing backslash on that link. The cognoscenti will figure out, but it's tough on the novices.
Uncle Dunc,
Done, thanks,

phone number would work thanks....very much...bear
Hey KK................My customer called Mr. Dump and found that he had no shakes on hand. He also was in the middle of another project and said it would be several weeks until he would have logs available to start froeing.
Alas for the job there were time constraints....money too and other materials were optioned.
Once again, THANKS for your info.....................................Iron Helix
