Attic Storage in a garage with a Hip Roof
Anyone have any clever way of constructing shelving or storage for general storage in the attic of a garage with a Hip Roof? Height in center is 5′, the garage is 24′ square. Just seems like unusabe space.
Thanks

I'd consider it to be an elevated crawlspace.
Hey there,
I think it depends on what you are trying to store. I think the simplest idea may be to install pull down stairs dead center and have short shelving units arranged in a square all around the stair opening. You really don't want to have to get into a space that short probably, just be able to reach the shelves from the stairs. That being said, you may not even want any shelves and just plan on shoving boxes up there that you can again reach without going all the way up yourself. Sorry, not very creative I know, but space is space. We just did a carport with a hip roof. The ceiling was MDO "panelized" with 1x4" pine. Even though the client said she did not care about access to the space above which is identical to what you have, we left one of the MDO panels loose sitting in the 1x4 grid like a drop ceiling tile. We used 4 peices of scrap plywood on top of the ceiling joists to give her a small floor space. When we were done we showed her the hidden attic access with a 6 foot stepladder. She was delligted when her left over floor tile and christmas lights ended up there and not in her full basement.
Not at all if it's truss roof unless it was made specifically with storage in mind. The bottom chord of most trusses is not made for any load at all.
