I suspect that the spring is (post #216605, reply #4 of 15)

I suspect that the spring is a critical part of the design.  Just think about the force that occurs when the wind catches the door as you open it.

Sorry (post #216605, reply #13 of 15)

I took the pivot distance on the jamb and the door to be equal. If they aren't I'm wrong.

My curiosity led me here.

or this larger size......

http://www.buydoorhardwarenow.com/commercial_door_stop_holder/cal-royal_cr555s_door_stop

I started looking at Ives commercial hardware and slipped over to Corbin-Russwin.  Thinking about carriage door hardware, spring loaded stops, .....

stumbled upon the above.  Something to call about.  Due to the size and weight call upon commercial hardware suppliers.  Potentially even hydraulic car hatchback hdwr.

Let me know how it ends.

Of course, those are for overhead doors, vs the "carriage" door style shown in Softball's picture.

the two links I posted are for swinging doors not overhead and the hydraulic hatch back only a possible answer to cobbling together a thing that might work.

The vendors refer to them as (post #216605, reply #11 of 15)

The vendors refer to them as "overhead door stops".  It's unclear whether this means a swinging overhead door, a rolling one or somerthing else, but I would not interpret it to mean a side-hinged carriage door.

Glynn-Johnson 450 Series Stop-Only Medium Duty Surface-Mounted Overhead Door Holder is for single acting doors – interior.

The best door control device is one that operates overhead, with an arm functioning from the jamb to the top of the door. When the door stopping or hold-open does not exceed 110°, this device is by far the most efficient.

The overhead holder and stop is out of the way, in contrast with floor or wall-mounted stops, which can be a stumbling hazard and are vulnerable to damage by accident and vandalism.

Glynn-Johnson overhead holders and stops should always be used on doors furnished with door closers, as closers are not door stops and should not be expected to perform that function. Glynn-Johnson overhead stops are designed to protect door closers from violent openings.
