I have a client who wants his (western red) cedar siding to age evenly without the appearance of having been stained. Any suggestions? Claude

Claude,
You can artificially weather cedar by applying a bleaching stain, more commonly referred to as a "weathering stain." Essentially, it is a water-repellent finish containing a bit of pigmentation as well as a few other added ingredients.
Like other stains, it is an applied finish, and should be reapplied once every several years. Many people spray it on and follow with back-brushing to work it into the texture of the wood. It will give your siding longer life, as well as giving it that natuarally weathered look.
Look locally for "weathering stains." A good paint shop should be able to provide you with a quality product.
*This is more a question than a suggestion. I've heard of using Baking Soda mixed with water on Eastern White cedar to give it a weathered appearence. Do you think it could work on Western Red?
*I'll try it and let you know.
