Looking for advice on using cypress bevel siding as alternative to high priced cedar. Application is new construction in western North Carolina and plan to use a semi-transparent stain. The cypress is about a fourth the cost of the cedar and is of better quality. Concerned about movement and long term durability. Thanks.

Big Al,
Cypress is fine. Back prime with either the stain or a waterproofer like Woodlife or CWP. Check your MC because cypress shrinks.
Down the bayou in the land of cypress,

If the stock size is large enough it's okay. Some years ago I put some beaded cypress siding on a house. It curled, buckled and in general was a mess. Another builder used the same material with the same results. We both removed it. I do not think it was the cypress but the thin cut that caused the problem.

Try the search feature, Al.
We just did this discussion a couple months ago with the general concensus that modern cyprus is not as good as the antique because of plantation grown large grwth rings. That allows it to shrink and deform as well as rot more quickly than the old. Still acceptable if installed dry and backprimed.
Thanks for the help!
