I have been drawing the construction drawings, for our company for several years now. Starting with plans from an architect, heading over to the engineer’s, and then back to the home owner, for the final OK. Inevitably the home owner wants to change parts of the original plans. I have had no formal design training, and often stumble over good design suggestions. I am searching for any books that teach some straight forward design principles. Any suggestions?

"A Pattern Language" by Alexander (and others). Doesn't get much more "straight forward" than that.
For an interesting switch from run of the mill kitchen cabinetry/configurations, you might look at Johnny Grey's work. He's an English (I think) architect with his name on quite a few books. But I don't think he's what you'd call "straight forward".
