Has anybody ever installed an entry door in a block wall without wood framing in the opening? I looked at a door today in a garage that was installed right in the 2×6 frame.
If I rip out the jamb there will only be concrete block in the opening. If I install a new 2×6 frame then install a prehung unit the door will be smaller than it is now.
Is it possible to just shim and screw the new jamb in the block with tapcons. Or should I buy a slab and mae the jamb out of 2×6’s like is there now.
Thanks to all. JEM

I use 2x8.
Do you use 2x8 for the framing or the jamb? Is it possible to install the prehung door without wood framing in the opening to save space. i can get a larger door in without the 2x around the jamb.
It is possible to install a prehung entry in the block wall. Be concerned with moisture control wicking from the block. Line the opening with peel/stick flashing (Ice and Water shield, sold in narrower rolls). The R.O. will probably be too big for the prehung unit. Fasten maybe 1/2" (or whatever makes it right) treated ply with tapcons, then the door unit which you'll have to fasten with tapcons as well. Or, get a commercial door with steel frame, have them prep for surface mount.........that is if the opening is right.Remodeling Contractor just outside the Glass City.

I used this exact method once...
wrapped the entire opening in ice/water shield, installed 1/2" ttd ply on the hinge side (was all I could add due to spacing) ...filled the sill with roofing cement to keep plyable and up the sides a foot-a solid bead- and set door, and screwed it in with tapcons. finished it up with minimal expanding spray foam insul.. solid and true"knowledge without experience is just information." In a garage or service type door you may be able to get away with tapcons. The blue paint is pretty noticeable. If it is an entry door or a more discerning customer, than you need to match the screw heads. Two ways that I've used: one is to drill the concrete and insert a wood dowel with PL. After the dowel is set it will allow you to screw your hinge screw it. Another way is to predrill and install a masonry sleeve anchor, again with PL. After its set run the hinge screw in and adjust. I've used these methods on res. and comm.projects without pullout or sag.
