I’m getting ready to frame a dormer remodel on my house and I need to buy like 300 2×4’s. Someone told me to order them by the draft cause it would be cheaper. Whats a draft?

Never heard of that either. I tried searching high and low and can't find anything (no draft or draught as unit of measure I can find).
Must either be like a bucket of steam, or an old timer unit of measure.
Have me curious too.

Otherwise known as a "bunk"- it's one strapped pile of material. Unless you're buying a whole truckload though (which you're not even close to needing), none of the lumber distributors are going to sell to you, and the yards aren't going to cut you any great deal just for ordering a whole bunk of studs.

They're probably talking about a bunk of 2X4s. The size of a bunk varies depending on the mill it comes from.
If you go to a lumberyard, pick the lumber up, and pay cash they're likely to cut you a break.
Never heard it called a "bunk". . .
A draft is between 240 and 260 piece of 2x's. It depends on where it comes from, but someone said that already.

never heard of a "draft" (or a "bunk"), but I'd guess it's what we call a "lift" (one strapped unit of dimensional lumber, plywood, boards, etc.) It will be cheaper by the draft/bunk/lift, but you'll have to have them delivered with a dump bed or fork truck unless you want to hand load/unload each piece...
On 8 footers, the yard forklift can load them endwise onto your pickup. At the site, you tie a rope to another truck or a tree and loop it around the bundle of 2x and drive out from under.
"Lift" is the word used here in LA, too. I just got a lift of Struct #1 ply on Friday. They loaded it in my F-350 by having one fork lift pick it up from the side, while another pushed it in from the end. Offloaded it by hand into the garage, it still rains a little this time of year.

it is the quanity that could easily pulled by a draft team...
the actual count made a difference if they were load on a skid, tobagan or frieghter....
be it oxen, horses (draft) mules or a hoard of bodies...
just the critters if you will..
Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming
WOW!!! What a Ride!
Forget the primal scream, just ROAR!!!
Maybe it's not bunk, but "punk", punk.
My lumber yard here in small town America, would for sure cut me a break, and still put it on my account.
Grunge on.
Have heard of Bunk, Lift, Strap, Not not draft.
Bow down - thanks for the edu.
If you just made that up, thenyou got me.Remodeling Contractor just on the other side of the Glass City
my grandfather had a water powered twin shaft mill in VT....
he and my father made tobagans, frieghters, skidders and sleds in timber frame style pulled by oxen or Shire teams ... some times mules.. (rare though)
they also logged... BTW a draft is made up of demensional rough sawn lumber...ya got a nickel for every one them that I put up and delivered...

it's a bunk here and on 2x4x8 it's always been 294ea to a bunk... saves me about 5cents per board to buy by the "bunk" if you buy by the bunk and frame fast they stay kinda straight ... cut the strapping and wait a few days... no tell'n what you'll have
