The light mounting blocks beside the front door of my house are in bad shape. They are on the north side of the house (no sun) and they are not well protected. The house has cedar clapboard siding and the light mounting blocks are pine. Ideally I would like to make the new blocks out of Azek but I’m not sure if this is wise. I would think that electrical boxes with mounting tabs that would be screwed to the exterior surface of the mounting block would be a no no. I’m thinking that an old work box with the mounting tabs that rotate up and meet the back of the mounting block might be ok. Thoughts and recommendations?
How about attaching the box to the sheathing and adding a mud ring to extend it to the surface of the Azek?

I make all mine from Azek and have had no problems at all.
Azek Mounting Block
Are the box ears screwed to the surface of the Azek? Do you cut a tight fitting hole to help support the box? Any weight limit to the lights you attach?
No, the boxes are mounted through the sides .se polyurethane caulk around the cut edges to seal the box to the Azek then mount the lights. After the light is mounted we caulk the top and sides of the light to the Azek to keep water out of the box. Don't know about a weight limit but I've hung some fairly large lights with no issues.
Metal Box Mounting Tabs
The current box has tabs at the top and bottom that rest against face of the mounting block. There is a strap that is screwed to the the box and spans the opening. The light fixture is screwed to the strap. I was going to reuse the current box.
