I was told this black external sheathing on the side of my house is called fiber board and primarily used for a sound barrier. I have most of the clapboard siding off right now and was wondering if it was worth replacing the fiber board with something structurally stronger like OSB or plywood. Or is this stuff that breaks off stronger than I think and I should just leave it on?
Thanks,
Steve

I don't see the picture but I believe it's asphalt impregnated homasote. In the sixties and early seventies, it was considered a good insulation board. Generally, when they used it there were diagonal braces at the corners or a single sheet of plywood instead of homasote there. No need to replace it if it's not failing or if there's no rot to replace.
Thanks Piffin. I replaced some I had to remove but I will leave the rest.
