Can a gas dryer exterior vent have a damper inside? In a cold climate, I suspect that there would be freeze up issues. Sure is a lot of cold air blowing in on a windy day though.

You need the right exterior vent.

Zero air leakage with this puppy.
Do you know who makes that style vent? I'll be into the hardware store this weekend to scope out the options.Adam
This is one brand: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0001UZQ6W/ref=nosim/howtohome1-20Ours I just found in our local HW store.

Have you ever had any problems with it freezing up? With the natural gas dryer, I don't want any blockage in the vent.Adam
We have an electric dryer, but we've never had it freeze up, even in subzero weather.

Don't get too panicked over blockage with gas dryer - needs to be adressed and avoided, but not a panic.
Gas dryers have a sort of "vent temperature" sensor; vent blocks; temperature rises; gas valve closes; flame stops.
Clothes don't dry very well, but it minimizes risks from a blocked vent - you will figure it out when the dryer keeps spinning longer than usual.

I agree with JTC1. My gas dryer was spinning but the flame kept going out after it started. repairclinic.com said it was a symptom of a clogged vent. I had recently replaced the duct work with a smooth, rigid wall duct but didn't clean out the clog at the external opening. A quick cleanup of that the dryer was running great again.
