Becomming Paranoid (post #191526, reply #1 of 30)
There was a reply to my question, I replied to that, when I posted they both disappeared, NOW WHAT?
"If all else fails, read the directions"
I've come back this last few (post #191526, reply #2 of 30)
I've come back this last few days to see if things have shaken out. I don't hink Taunton really cares and it certainly is not as informative or entertaining as past years so it's time to leave this place for good for me. If they cared they would have fixed this site a long time ago and not alienated so many.
I'm not flippin' you off.........just counting cubits !!!
I'm pretty sure you can attach an image (post #191526, reply #3 of 30)
In fact, let me try and see if it works.
David (post #191526, reply #4 of 30)
Yes, we can attach an image from our own files . And in the beginning of this changeover-I believe BossHog was able to pull images from photobucket etc. But then for him all he ended up with was a box with an X in it.
Same goes for me copying a picture hosted on the internet from say Simpson (copy/paste). It'll appear as the image while I'm composing, but when I hit post it becomes the box with an X.

now if I can remember the system-I might just be somebody.
But like I mentioned to Dan Morrison.
This is bassackwards in the day and age of copy/paste off an already posted picture on the internet.
Plain more work, no?

Speed is the word (post #191526, reply #8 of 30)
Threads with a lot of photos in them load very slowly especially for people who don't have high-speed internet (lots of people are still on dial-up and many others are on satelite, which isn't all that speedy, either).
They also clog mobile devices.
The thumbnail treatment allows pages to load faster while preserving your (God-given) right to post images to the forum.
I know that it will take a little thinking, Calvin, but hell -- you're a remodeler. You figure out much more difficult things than this every day.
You can do it, buddy,

Well hey Dan (post #191526, reply #9 of 30)
Tho I rcvd notification of your post (I have "ALL" checked in the notif. box) I see it was addressed to Shacko.
Operator Error?
See how easy it is ?
or System Error?
Is there a way to at least intersperse the thumbs within the message? or is there a way that could be made to happen.
At least a photo essay would be able to be followed along easier, w/o having to remember which one went where................
Or perhaps the forum builders couildn't see the value of the photo essay. Imagine if you will having the mag photo's just lumped up on one page-no captions. Pretty bogus, no?
And Dan, I'm no tech savvy kind of guy. I'm beyond beginner, but have no aptitude to think like a forum.............
It's easier to think like a rain drop, no kidding.

Are you Ed or Jasons (post #191526, reply #10 of 30)
Are you Ed or Jasons replacement? Or is this another chief to manage this forum? Have you read the stuff in the Forum Suggestions since last Nov?
This reminds me of when Coke made their 'wise' formula change. Except this is profoundly different. Coke 'got the message' and got even wiser ... and changed back ... WHY? Because it was the smart thing to do. They continue to dominate the industry.
Apparently FH saw a problem and fumbled around for a fix ... 'nuff said.
But your tips are appreciated. Don't assume your audience that are often VERY GOOD at solving construction problems are necessarily adept at navigating your web site (some ARE ambi tech turous ... is that a word).
Come on Dan you're a Senior Web Producer ... you should be able to figure this out. You live and breath this stuff.

Image (post #191526, reply #11 of 30)
The only thing I was trying to do was go to a site, fine a picture of what I want, right clck, go to properties on the screen that shows up, click that and a url shows up, cut and paste that in the forum reply and the only thing that shows up is the picture, I guess that it won't work on Breadtime?
Anything much more complicated is beyond my limited ability on the computer
"If all else fails, read the directions"
Here's a slideshow of how to add pictures (post #191526, reply #12 of 30)
Shacko,
Step 1: Find the image you want to use.
Step 2: hover your mouse over it and right click
Step 3: Choose 'Save as' and save the image wherever you want to (I typically save to my desktop)
Step 4: Upload image to your post.
Step 5: Upload more images
DO NOT CUT AND PASTE -- IT WILL NOT WORK.
I'll work on getting the ability to add captions to photos.

Dan, still on the topic of pictures. (post #191526, reply #13 of 30)
The slide show option................
Is that only available to the first post initiating a thread? I seem to think that I saw that in replies as well.
If so, how's that done?
thanks.

It was supposed to be in the reply directly above your question (post #191526, reply #14 of 30)
When I wrote slideshow, I thought it would act like the photo pop-ups work on Green Building Advisor.
I'll add it to the list.
On GreenBuildingAdvisor.com, the pop-up photos can be ganged together; arrows inside the popup point you forward or back.
see here:
http://www.greenbuildingadvisor.com/blog...
Click the photo, notice two things:
1. There are photo captions a
2. You can keep clicking through the photo stream.
This should solve the problem od not being able to pair words with photos while also not clogging people's internet connections.

Thanks.
and please don't quit or let them fire you till we get this thing straightened out.
Well, that's pretty selfish.
Keep up the good work. Just getting a response after 6 months is remarkable. An educated one is even more amazing.
Where you been?
EDIT:
dig this, the search is up there an appears to work.
What the heck-you been here a few days and all this happens?

Where you been? Working and (post #191526, reply #16 of 30)
Where you been?
Working and drinking beer (typically in that order, though not always).
Yes, I swapped out a Google search bar in place of the Drupal one (thanks for noticing). I was going to change the headings to 'Fast Search" and "Slow Search" but I thought that maybe my bosses wouldn't think that was all that funny.
There's a bug in the drupal search, it works really, really well on the GBA site. The developers will work the bugs out when they know exactly what the bugs are.
It will really, really help me if you all are clear when you explain what's not working. Screenshots of the problem help a lot -- [Ctrl] + [Print Screen] will copy your screen. Then you can paste it into some kind of photo software and then save as a jpg file. If you don't have photo software, paste it into a word doc and attach it to a post.
Half sentences do not help.

that didn't even rhyme.
Here's a poem i filled out on a time card once:
Me and jim we hung soffit
It weren't for fun, but for proffit
We tried and we tried on compound 45s
But in the end we still had to caulk it.

Am I reading this string right? You're fresh meat ... come to provide us with some real support and help? By the responses, it appears to be postitive.
You going to work on fixing this thing? I came across a bit strong ... which we don't do much around here (yeah right, we usually tell it like it is). No offense intended. Hope you're here to fix what someone else broke.

Clew (post #191526, reply #26 of 30)
To know a bit about Dan M's history would suggest to you that at least we have a couple positives going here.
He's not an IT guy first and tradesman second. He truly loves his craft and has been a part of it-a big part. That he evolved into web bldg and management is I think a continuation of his background.
He might have about the most FHB longevity of those we've been in contact with here. Whether that means he'll be gone b/4 he knows it or not I can't say. At least I think he acknowledges the value of the forum to both Taunton (if they realize it of not) and to the community it serves.
He understands (or should since we beat his ear at the Fest) what it means to us and to those that left.
He still has his sense of hearing, and can read and does read, when something is addressed to him.
He's no pushover "yes" man though. He's going to be pretty steadfast in his opinion and might try to convince us of alternatives to "the way we had it".
But something very positve is involved here. He is here. He's not powerless. His cohort Rob who was also at the Fest mentioned to me they want the forum to work. It's not going to be a walk in the park nor a take it or leave it attitude either. This is the most positive thing to happen here since the hollow words of molding this forum were uttered in December. It's the only positive thing as far as I'm concerned. I know it beats the hell out of changing the save button to post.
At least it's what I got from talking to them at the Fest......................and afterwards. I half expected that this would be a quick promise, slow to keep. I don't feel that way now. I really think this place might stand a chance.
I don't think it's a waste of time either to stay here and attempt to do something constructive. I stayed around and attempted constructive suggestions and moderate criticism. I [CUTE LITTLE PUPPY]ed and moaned. Did some prodding just to see if I could get a response-which I did sort of, then all I heard was the hum of the computers fan. All I ever wanted was to not quit just because it was hard and to have some communication with somebody in hopes of making it more user friendly. Maybe this is that opportunity.

Calvin, Thanks for the heads (post #191526, reply #27 of 30)
Calvin, Thanks for the heads up and the observations. You obviously get around this forum much more than I. I visit a couple of topics at best and try to provide food for thought. I frequently don't know who is who very much. We'll see, I guess, eh? Some fresh management should be a good thing.

Dan is from my neck of the woods, just across the water a stone's throw.
back in about 2002 I think it was, I applied to Taunton for a job that Andy Engle advertised on whatever form the forum had back then, as a writer/editor. Dan got the job and has talked to me about writing for them since that time. I have always seen him as one of the few real people they have had there since Andy E. Maybe it's because he bought me dinner once, LOL. But I do respect him and have more trust for him that anyone I have seen involved with this forum in years now.
Maybe Taunton knows they screwed up and sent in in to the arena to fight the wolves and lions
Let's not eat him up because of who sent him. He has a hard enuf job working for/with Jason Revzon and what he screwed up here.
