How do I cut a Lally column ?
Which blade do I use, what is the best method and the best
saw to be used ? Reciprocal saw or compound saw with the right blade ?
Thanks for help.

Marco,
A few guys I know who cut a lot of them use a large pipe cutter.
I don't cut many, so I use a metal cutting black abrasive blade (about $3 or $4) on my circular saw.
I tick mark the length, then wrap a piece of paper around the column, matching the edges of the paper with the tick mark, and then mark the entire circumference of the coulumn.
I cut through steel casing only, rolling the column as I cut.
When the entire circumference is cut I whack it with a hammer and the concrete core fractures right on the cut line.
I recommend goggles and ear protection.
It may not be the best way, but it's fast and accurate...and noisy.<g>
I've cut many and I use a metal blade in my recip saw

Andy,
Way too boring! Fire up the sidewinder and watch the sparks fly!<g>
How's the prospective move going?
Thanks very much for your reply, I supposed I should
cut only the steel and break the concreat by impact.
Thanks again. Marco
Use a piece of paper and spray paint to mark, abrasive blade in circular saw. Quicker and cheaper than a sawzall (blades wear out quickly).
Are you installing or removing? For removal, the first tool I reach for is a jack.
;)
Good point !
Thanks God only installing, not removing.
I guess I should have said.
I've removed about a half dozen of those buggers and I have never had one that had a concrete core. Hmmmm.
BTW I've cut em out with both recips and an angle grinder. the recip is a bit cleaner but the sparks from the grinder can be pretty cool to watch too.

Hey Steve,,,,,even a better idea....if I get that 320 year old house (see pix in my thread on The 320 year old house) we could have a Merrette/Andybuildz Fest .Two acres.bring tents and beer....lol...Its on two acres 45 minutes to Manhatten...close to the Long Island Railroad ($7 cab ride) which goes to Penn Station and all airports....I hear the media will attend as well......might get John Lennon to do a surprise appearance being that he use to live in this town...so whatcha think? MAybe we might even invite Andy E. and that other cranky dude....LOL
