Installing steel I beam existing construction
I’m installing a steel I beam to support my third floor. The ceiling joists will be tied into the side of the I-beam to keep the ceiling all one level. The engineer has specked out using joist hangers that are welded to the top of the I-beam then the I-beam will be installed. My question is this application normal for old construction? having to line up all the floor joists with the joist hangers as the I-beam is raised into position doesnt seem normal. I would think this application is more for new construction. Thanx for any feed back….

Steel bean w/jst. hgrs.
The engineer may have a good reason for his/her recommendation. On the otherhand, they don't have to pay for and do the actual work. As the old saying goes, "it's easier said than done".
Have you checked with to him/her and explained your concerns? There may be a less expensive option.(i.e. bolting a lumber nailer to the web to fasten the hangers.
