Measuring the lengths of the sections of crown moulding
I am installing 5 1/4 inch crown moulding with a 7/8″ x 3/8″ half round profile 3 1/2 inches below the bottom of the crown. I measured all the wall lengths along where the bottom of the crown will be. I used a laser distance meter and took more than one reading at each wall. I compared shorter measures to a tape to proof the laser readings. 90 degree inside corners were coped, 135 degree inside angles were mitered. My problem became the lengths I cut, mitered and coped were to long by over 1/4 inch. My error occured with the crown and half round. What am I doing wrong.
Thanks:

Not there, so beats me.
But one thing comes to mind-you might be shooting and or measuring just a bit outside the corner-with mud buildup deep in the corner-could messing up your number. Two "small lesses" might equal a strong eighth.............
or
When you cut-are you hitting the distance mark at the very back edge of the crown? A bit forward on the edge of the crown, and there's another 1/8th or so.
or
laser guide on the saw is not quite right.
or
you left the line and should have taken it.
With all that surface area and width of crown-precise is tough-usually a bit long allows the crown to press itself tight into the other pc. If they're coming out long on an outside corner or short measurement-god knows what's the problem.
Seems to me you're complaining when you should be cheering. You could just as easily need to haul out the board stretcher for every piece.
