Newel Post Install
I would like to know what other stair builders thoughts are on installing newel post . To top mount the balcony newels or to drop them over the balcony face. I prefer to drop the newels and keep my baluster edge lined up with the outside of string. Any thoughts?

When it comes to winders. (post #205599, reply #3 of 3)
When it comes to winders. landings and balconys, they can have their peculiarities. Looks like you handled it well on that set. I like the longer newels sticking down to catch the skirts. The only critique I would have is the two riser gooseneck looks a bit high, but that's nit picking and I know how winders are, hate those. Most cases, I'm mounting square newels by lapping into the first riser and often centered to a 4" wall, even if there isn't a wall. I bolt through with extra backing secured to the stringers. You have to watch out when mitered returns are used on open treads so round tenon ballusters don't hit that joint or hit your screws or nails into the stringers. Old school stairs usually had the ballusters notched in to the treads and the return nailed on over. I prefer to use a spline and glue them. Some newels have a round tenon, often on a bull nose first tread, such as with over the post volutes or turn outs. I don't like the strength of that connection as well on those but that's they way they are. It's usually a given that people will be swinging on newels or coming up and yanking on them to see how strong they are. I want to slap those people.
