Anybody ever seen a cover or other gizmo to keep leaves and other crud out of rain gutters that really works? I’ve heard that pine needles and maple whirly birds can beat gutter helmet type devices. I’m starting to get tired of going up there 4 times a year, but I’m not ready to chop down all my trees.

Gutter Topper! I have installed 3 and none of the gutters have leaves, including the 215 ft on a 4/12 roof in the woods.
ditto on Gutter Topper. It only seems expensive until you've lived with clogged gutters (used to clean them 3x year and still couldn't keep up. It was a messy, dangerous job and I've not had to touch them since (1.5 years so far).
Look at http://www.leaffilter.com
I haven't seen anything that comes close to this product for function, though a few do compete on price. This may be a DIY, but I think it needs to be installed by a "certified" installer.
