*Big enough to hold all the crap that gets piled on it & still have just enough room to fix a sandwich. After you move a few small things aside. Joe H
*Johnnie: The ideal is to have the back of the backsplash in plane with the back of the cabinet, plus 1/2" for scribe. The front of the cabinet ideally should be in plane with the doors of the cabinet. In the case of door-lip the countertop will over hang another 3/8" of an inch if you have a 3/4" build-up (or "build-down" as some call it), acceptable. What you don't want is the door to extend beyond the countertop. If you have a 24" cabinet with a 3/4" overlay door, which is considered to be 1" due to hinge gap, then you have a total of 25", then add 1/2" for the scribe, totalling 25-1/2".

*Normal counter tops are only used under normal windows, next to normal doors all of which are found in a normal house which is absent of any normal abnormaliities. Otherwise order tops that are abnormal in order to fit the situation like mine or Mongo's......................Iron Helix
