I have a one story house built in 1976, with masonite exterior siding. I have found a scap of the orginal siding and it was finished in green by the manufacturer. I believe the exterior has since been painted twice. The most recent coat appears to be a Sears linseed oil based solid stain. Now it is starting to peel and flake. Have been told by the folks at the paint store that oil based strain is the problem as it was formulated for use on unpained wood.
Would hate to scrap the entire house. (98% of the surface is in good shape and the masonite has a pattern,) Here are my questions:
(1) Are the folks at the paint store right?
(2) Is there some way to treat the problem, if they are right?
(3) Would It make sense to replace the siding? The house is not large and is one story. If so is there some sort of prefinished material that would look good and not break the bank?
The house is in Michigan
