Greetings all,
We decided to remodel the living room. I thought that an investment in a router and some red oak may produce some nice baseboard and door casings for the living room. I had finally gotten to the staining part and realized that my oak was in at least three different shades when I used Olympics Natural oil stain. I suppose that buying my oak at Home Depot was a mistake for however many reasons. At this point I have only stained the wood for the interior of the walkways, (jamb boards?).
What are my options? Thanks, John

Let's not blame HD for this one - or you either yet.
Wood grows with variations of shade, texture, grain, and colour - just like people.
Grain matching hardwoods can be a challenge or a source of pride. It takes time, practice, and a little extra waste product. On a larger job, you can sort the lumber to use in different rooms or situations. One shade can go to baseboards and another to casings and sills.
You can sand back what you have.
You can tint the stain or use a coloured stain.
or you could use plastic lumber - It's all the same.
