I need to patch a hole atop indoor 4 inch soil pipe. Seems I’ve heard various opinions regarding the fix but seems a cast iron saddle looks typical/suitable. Divergent opinions as to need for rubber gasket and putty. I figure based on these I ought to use the rubber gasket and plumbers putty (over the entire width & length of the gasket – or simply around the perimeter of the hole). Wondering what advice I might get here?

How did the hole get there?
Seems irrelevant, but since you asked... it was drilled and about 1 inch diameter.
I think I'd use a rubber gasket, a piece of sheet metal, and some spiral hose clamps.
You do need to be careful to get it gas-tight.
What would ensure that?
A good tight fit, a reasonably pliable gasket, and maybe some gasket cement.
Great! Thanks!
