Has anybody tiled over existing tile. The existing tile is in good shape. They want leave the old tile in cause they want the extra 1/2″ in height it will provide. Would it be better to screw down ulay and adhere tile to it or just a layer of thin set over the existing tile.

Four years ago I did a tile-over-tile job. No complaints about the tile job so far. The thinset was special for tile-over-tile and I got it at Home Depot. Old tile has to be sound and absolutely clean.

Thanks Bee Jay. The tile below is sound.
Many years ago we had a moonlighter tile man. He was very good and worked three jobs all his life. Well on this one house my dad and I showed up after he had begun and when we looked in the hall bath he was just finishing up the floor, as usual the job looked great and it was so difficult to tell him he had installed the wrong tile. He looked up and said "no problem" he would just tile over with the correct tile and he said he would pay for the tile. Well, we wouldn't let him pay for it, he had worked for us for too long with no problems at all. What I remember the most as we headed down the stairs was the blast of, I presume, profanities in Spanish. He was a great guy.
Since then we have had the occasion to tile over tile on a few other jobs with no problems at all.
