I needed support posts for my second floor porch and saw an ad for something called YellaWood. They take clear pressure treated yellow pine, kiln dry it, and re-mill it. They were advertising “6×6” hollow posts through the Home Depot. Sounded good, so I ordered two.
They ship by truck, which adds to the cost. It also makes returns difficult.
When mine arrived, I unpacked them and primed the wood. I noticed one was a little warped, but I was cutting mine into several shorter posts, so it worked out.
After a few weeks, the glue joints became a little prominent, but a little work with an orbital sander took care of that.
There are also defects in the surface (like tearout) that I will be patching with filler.
Several months on there are some small checks in the surface, but I think a couple coats of paint will take care of that.
They are actually a bit smaller than 6×6 beams, so standard post hardware won’t fit. I cobbled together brackets from Simpson angles and plates.
Would I buy them again? Probably. I would not recommend them to anyone who is planning posts 8 to 10 feet tall. That warpage I mentioned would be a little obvious there. If you’re looking for near-perfect surfaces, keep looking.
