Anyone round Boston, New England.?
I am a remodeler in Boston.. I have FHB #1 thru todays.. been at this awhile…
any one from my area on the forum?? our website is www.livingstructures.net
The Nexus Green Building Center is about to open right in the middle of downtown Boston
See www.greenroundtable.org…. the person who heads it says the term “green building” is hard to get away from…. but likes the term “ideal building ” better..
I’m attaching a document they use to assess the “green” of a project.
Look forward to sharing more here…

I'm in Boston. Do you guys try to get your buildings Leed certified?
we havent ventured into new construction.. LEED has been applied mostly to new commercial and institutional buildings thus far.. Residential and remodeling versions are coming on line in due course.we're in Jamaica Plain...
lets keep in touchGregory
Couldn't get your website to work.
This checklist looks a little rigid to me. It requires third party blower door testing and prohibits electric water heaters. I'd go with a more flexible setup like the NAHB's Green Building Initiative. http://www.theGBI.com
The GBI gives you a flexible scoring system so you can still use electric water heaters so long as they are inslated and done right. It has work arounds for folks who don't want to spend the money for third party testing but are willing to show digital photo's of the air sealing behind the tubs and so forth. The only hard and fast requirements have to do with running appropriate sizing calculations on your HVAC before installation including both manual J and ResCheck (both required by code but rarely enforced) and a very detailed check list to help you make sure your homeowners manual is comprehensive (a very good idea anyway and once you do it for one house your just copy it and change the address and update as needed for each subsequent house.)
Plus you can probably get your local Home Builders Association to set it up and make you look like a major eco hero for your marketing. We just set it up here in NC (National gave us $5,000 for set-up expenses the first year) Its a huge success. One guy in the program sold three houses last January. He went 100% energy star and GBI certified and sold more than that in the first three days of January this year.
Good work Shelter Nerd
as Amory Lovins observed.."heating water with electricity is like cutting butter with a chain saw"... it's easy to do but there are tools better matched to the job... still overall, what you've been doing is really great!
Thanks, It's been a lot of fun.
the roundtable link is interesting, but I cannot seem to get to the livingstructures website. arthurhttp://www.thesmallbuildingcompany.com
I changed the .net to .com and I have a website. I assume you are this Real Estate company that also consults in green building. Is that correct? I am in western MA .. the South Berkshire county area. Its great to see there are less expensive houses still within an hours drive.ciaohttp://www.thesmallbuildingcompany.com
Hey Arthur. actually the realtor that has the same name is in the Catskills and has no connection with us.. also in New Mexico there is a company with the same name. They do adobe & solar construction...the name is inspired by the work of the New Alchemy Instiututewe are seeking to develop the solar greenhouse lifestyle

I'm 45 minutes south of boston. It's not that I don't like green, but poeple talk about it way to much. Go Sox.
