JP,
You say it's easier. Maybe to post the pics but the comments end up #### backwards. That would seem to make it alot more difficult to understand in a discussion of the posted work. What we have here seems to work just fine and actually enhances the discussion at BT rather than in some picture gallery on the website.
Now the gallery would make a fine picture book sort of place to show off your work. You know, like a coffee table book.

Well if they close the gallery down and you can't get On The Way............shoot on over to that other more upfront site and start a thread.

Hey, I hate to jump on the whiner wagon, but as an avid lurker trying to learn, I don't see a thread such as the recent,"gable dormer thread" really working in that format. It just seems too much like a fluffy photo posting site, don't they already have those? I like to see the 2x4s before the doors!
Hmmm... I kinda like this one. Don't remember it on BT, must have come from somewhere else.

Well as I see it there are two possibilities: 1) The photo is a set from " As the World Turns" daytime soap. or 2) Something out of the "Tavern" recently where one can never tell which way is up.

I went inside the walls of "the castle" in the late 70's. It was never even close to being finished. I looked thru the windows of the house part and I don't remember seeing anything finished inside. Just framing. The exterior walls were concrete block. It was pretty derelict at that time. The only security they had was an old police cruiser with 4 flat tires and weeds growing around it parked the gate into the courtyard. The gate by the road was open and I just drove up and walked right in, looked around for a while and left.http://www.quittintime.com/ View Image
I saw a "tour" on the news last night, it's pretty opulent in there now..I mean gold leaf on the furniture kinda stuff. As I drove by today, I thought of this thread, but by the time I got my camera/phone out, I was too far past it.

Actually it probably wouldn't be that hard to make a castle nowadays. You could probably find ICF makers who have round forms. Just stack 'em up and fill 'em up. And you can that stone veneer stuff.
But I'm still thinking your resale might be somewhat restricted.

No offense, since I understand why you're trying to move photo threads out to your main site, but the gallery is a very poor substitute for a good photo/build thread. Here's why I think the gallery is a poor replacement for photo/build threads:
1) Time
Because this forum is about building, time sequences are critical. I don't see a way with the galleries to present a sequence of photos that would clearly illustrate the method and madess of what was built. I assume that if you upload photos in the right order, they'll be displayed in that order, but that is both not obvious to the poster, nor to the public, since the pictures have no timestamp and it's up to author to go through the laborious process of then labeling them.
2) Back and forth
Along with time sequences, one of the other super valuable things about a good photo/build thread is the context that is formed around the thread. If somebody posts a question or points out a problem, you can usually figure out immediately what they are referring to, since it's usually the last set of pictures, or they actually provide a link to the post they refer to. You can do the same, I suppose, in the gallery, but because the photos and the comments are separate, you really have no idea 1) what is new and 2) what the heck people are talking about. The format of the gallery divorces the conversation from the build, so yes, it is truly just a gallery of photos, but it's no longer a build *thread*.
3) Search
The galleries are apparently not included in either of your site search or your BT search, rendering the galleries relatively useless to those who don't want spend hours browsing for what they need. I know I do my fair share of browsing BT, but I do far more searching, and search is critical. At least if the build threads are in BT I can find them. Not so with the gallery.
As I said before, I know that you're looking to leverage all the great stuff that BT'ers post to the forum to increase your site revenue, uniques, etc. But I think that you really need to look at if the gallery will beget more gallery postings. Here on BT, there are personalities who have attracted a following for one reason or another, and their participation is one of the most valuable resources that FH and BT have to offer. And for you, their contributions are free so you'd best go about asking those people what they'd like to see or how you could improve things so that they continue to contribute.
I would bet that instead of spending the time and effort to get people to post to the gallery instead of BT if you spent some time getting the glue between the two set up so that a forum post can be displayed in the gallery without any special work from the posts author, you'd continue to see great build threads on BT, and you'd reap the rewards on your website.
At the same time, you should be working with Mzinga to get the simple stuff working on the forum... Why, for instance, are people still having trouble posting pictures? And why is posting pictures inline such a pain in the butt?
Remove obstacles for your users, not create them, and I think trying to drive people to the galleries instead of letting them be in the forums will dilute the one resource that you shouldn't dare dilute: your reader's attention. Because at the end of the day, the only thing that advertisers are willing to pay for is a slice of your reader's attention....

unimpressive is the best I can come up with. Good work, but the format is lacking. I come here for details on the how-tos, how-dids, mistakes and how to avoid them. So far I don't see that being the focus of the new Gallery, just a showcase of nice works when they're done.

yeah, every year I keep teetering on the subscription and actually convinced myself to not renew this last time around and then DW thought she was doing me a favor and renewed it for 3 years. 3 years!? I could've been drinking that money! maybe I'll look at the adds for the new products more. Probably not.
Pass the meat & taters, will ya?
As a reader & not a poster, I won't visit the gallery. I peruse BT to learn something. The knowledge is in the discussions that go with the threads. A picture file is useless. It sounds like a dead end to me.
My opinion here,
The comments end up in reverse order, hard to follow.
The comments are tied to the album not the specific pictures, also making it hard to follow.
Did not see an option to zoom in on a photo to see some detail. We can't do that on all pic here, but can on some.
Another thought, Separating the photos from breaktime just makes BT less attractive to come hang out.
There is a working index to most all past posted photos in this folder. Being as you now own them ( as per the register page , of content) you can easily find that Index and gather all that you wish. I suggest you use advanced search function, being as the standard search will not bring you joy.
I agree with some of the other posters here, that new gallery is awkward and unintuitive. I could not even find a link to the gallery from the page after login. Something is amiss.

There has got to be something going on that's just been totally missed.
I mean how else can you explain what has been done to the heart and soul of BT by the banishments and then have the audacity to ask for project photos not to be placed on BT but instead in a new Gallery?
Starting to sound like they are not happy with BT and are moving towards a total revamp that will replace BT as we know it.
Wonder if they'll keep the Breaktime title?

Makes me look back to day 1, getting ahold of a couple issues and marveling at them.
Getting a subscription, getting fired up when you knew that it was due soon to arrive in the mailbox as you waited for it
then digested every nook and cranny in the mag right down to the indicia.
Then after some time passed an announcement about a web page on computer. Didn't have a computer. Got one and guess what the first thing I tried to find was?
heh heh Must have tried to type-in the http link a million times and never got it till I learned how to do a search and THERE it was.
Seems a goodly number of years have passed.
Must have been some heavy pressures going on up top to bring this all to be.
No excuse tho'. Poor is poor and what an example of new management is being paraded here every day.
Can't fault any owner of a business to want to mold and try new things but the processes used that bring them there show the true fabric of a business or individual.
I doubt it. Mzinga is only the carrier. For them to tell FHB how to run their site is like the USPS telling you what to write in a letter to your kids.
Welcome to the Taunton University of Knowledge FHB Campus at Breaktime. where ... Excellence is its own reward!
Boy thats what I fear the most, this place has been kinda like mentor for me, its sad to see that some of the real good posters arent around now and then they are discouraging those who are still left. Like I said DIY network, I havent found the mag to be very good lately either, mostly boring.

Chuck Slive, work, build, ...better with wood
I found this article when trying to find out what the circulation is (around 300k in 2005 btw)http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0BOR/is_10_18/ai_109171194/pg_1?tag=artBody;col1the articel is from 2003 and quotes "Sarah Roman, Chief Marketing Officer, The Taunton Press". Here are some quotes that I find ironic today."All of these products came out of a desire to fulfill our customers' needs," says Roman. "We look at what the customer wants.""We've changed our whole attitude about marketing and circulation, putting the customer at the center of every effort, looking at our operations from their perspective.""It's all about understanding and fulfilling customer needs.""The energy and money required to replace these orders could be spent on building customer loyalty," Roman says.Roman believes you will never win on price and you will always win on value. She does not embrace the strategy of step-up pricing where "you treat your best customers the worst."for the last quote:
"In the end, the advertiser will be there because you will have a better customer for them to position their products for," she says. "Customer respect will reward you."End of quotes. Read the article to put it all into context but I think Ms. Roman understands customer service. Bet she's not at Taunton now. <sigh>I also noticed in the magazine that they have a "Taunton Gaurantee" see page nine of the latest issue. Seriously considering using that.TFB (Bill)
First thign to remember about marketing and those inside it: They don't have to tell the truth. They just have to convince people to buy the product.
Yes. BUT the Taunton customer is not those of us who buy it or read it, it is the ADVERTISERS! We are just the gimmick to bring the advertisers in the door , it is the advertisers they are really selling to and who are their customers. We are the customers of the customers.
They can't get your Goat if you don't tell them where it is hidden.
I agree the bigger revenue stream is the advertisers.BUT, the advertisers place the ads in the mag so that people/us will see them and hopefully buy their wares. If we are not buying the magazine, the advertisers will use their marketing dollars elsewhere. It's a vicious cycle.I found the circulation data from '05, I wonder if we can find the unique page views or for the forum per day or per month.
TFB (Bill)
So an e-mail, or letter dropped to the advertisers explaining the displeasure can't hurt right?
They can't get your Goat if you don't tell them where it is hidden.
Kind of what I'm thinking.also wonder how many lurk here, hmmmmmm?TFB (Bill)
Now you're on to something..........As an aside I'd say to the guy who created this image thing that although it would have been laughable to do such a thing in the old Fine Homebuilding................it fits right in with the new and unimproved model. My Blog
I'm afraid I have to agree with the others. More confusing to get a story and explaination with the new gallery.

Thanks for the invitation.
I think not though.
I haven't posted much here in the way of pictures and I am not into the "Ego" of having my own gallery shots as it appears the "Gallery" is set up for that function.
Started the one thread just for a complete tour of a job of building an ICF building to be used as a winery because I thought enough here would be interested.
Lack of feedback and ability at the "Gallery" to answer questions, get input etc. as others have mentioned would simply dissuade me from the effort.
Now on another subject :
I am one of the original group of subscribers to Taunton Press,First edition of Fine Woodworking then switched to 1st. Edition of Fine Home Building and have continued that subscription to date.
I am late commer to BreakTime as I started visiting here just in the last couple of years.
I will take this opportunity to inform you that I will no longer continue my subscription to the magazine as my own statement against the recent behavior on the part of the staff of Break Time. If this causes me to lose my Breaktime privileges then so be it.
I cannot in good conscience continue to support your magazine.
dovetail
I'm thinking the same way you are. Right now I do not plan to renew.
I wonder how many of the advertisers lurk here.TFB (Bill)
Ditto what you said. I'm not buying the magazine, no magazine subscription, not buying any books, and not buying a single thing on their website. Not a danged thing from Taunton.

Are you taking suggestions on the new site.... or just telling us what to do?You know, it doesn't go without notice, that since Andy Engle left, nobody from fhb contributes anything to the bt site. You don't seem to know just how lucky you are. You've got pros who like to hang out here. While they're hanging out, they give your target diy'ers the advice they need... drawing in more diy'ers... and they're buying into taunton stuff. These pros are your salespeople, and they're not even on commission. You shucked them out of the tavern, now, it seems, you want to shut down this professionally informative folder???I just renewed my scrip to fhb. Most of the articles are on the sketchy side, ie the stair remuddling one which stated that stairs with over 4 risers don't need a handrail. Don't you realize that some folks actually believe what you print, whether it's right or not. I. actually, use your mag for the ads... but I don't have to. Anyway, you chucked a bunch of people out of here that shouldn't have been chucked... and unless you respond to this. I'm canceling my subscription, and pushing that course on anybody I meet that does subscribe.

I don't bet often, usually lose.
But in this instance I'm thinking the question is a good one, the answer should produce pertinent information on how the future is to be here at BT. I'm asking a serious question and not in any way poking fun at JP or the rest of the establishment. I don't care if the answer comes on the forum or in an email. If you were sitting on a photon and left the second nearest star to earth, how long would it take you to get to here? You get out of life what you put into it......minus taxes.
Marv
well - assuming that you intend the sun the 'closest' to earth, the next out is proxima centauri at a bit over 4 light years - so I guess the answer to be slightly more than 4 years - "there's enough for everyone"
nope. There's a catch. You get out of life what you put into it......minus taxes.
Marv
You'd already be here.
yup. If you were traveling on a photon at the speed of light thru space/time, time would stop and you would arive instantly. You get out of life what you put into it......minus taxes.
Marv
OK, you've my attention - can you offer the explanation?"there's enough for everyone"
Per Einstein in 1915, general theory of relativity, time and space are linked together (space/time). The faster you accelerate, the slower you go in time. Gravity (acceleration), also causes you to go slower in time. Ultimatly if you reach the speed of light, time stops for you.
The fact that gravitation (acceleration) changes how fast time marches on is proved every day by GPS satellites. They must take into account the difference in gravitational fields (rate of time change) in order to work properly.
Edit: If I am talking to you and you walk away from me, you move ahead of me in time by a very small amount.

As a frequent lurker and sometime poster, I am surprised at how the atmosphere has changed. Whereas there is still good discussion going on, there is a definate slowdown of the different opinions that are normally rampant.
Would a new "buried junction box" thread get the same diversity of opinions that the previous one did? I don't think so.
I never visited the Tavern after it became Limited Territory, so I didn't see the mass outing that has happened, but the effects are apparent in the General Discussion threads.
Come on FHB...answer than man's question so I can concentrate on voting for Stan at http://www.dewalt.com/us/top17/ (Shameless plug for Stan)
I am not a frequent poster to Breaktime but I have uploaded my build photos and asked quite a few question and truly appreciate the feedback I have been given. There are literally thousands of home improvement / DIY websites and blogs on the internet today so why would a person choose this particular one?The answer is the people...period. Without such good content that is user generated and FREE!! to subscribers no one would be here at all.Face it, your forum software is terrible in comparison to all but the most antiquated websites around. Photo posting and tracking of messages is horrible as well. There are much better search functions available on sites with lesser content also. So with all these factors hindering the actual usage of this site why are newcomers like myself even wasting our time here? Simple -the people. When I first subscribed to FHB it was a true Eureka! moment. I had found it. Informational, trendy but not too This Old House or Architectural Digesty - just right. Nuts and bolts of doing the actual work to achieve an above average outcome. Not too DIY that it is below people with a more advanced skill set either - just right.I also purchased the DVD collection and subscribe to the online archive content and this has been a treasure trove of very, very valuable information to me as I build my own home. These features are top notch in what they offer in comparison to other sites.Remember the first edition of the DVD and how terrible the user interface was? The screen size was ridiculously small and the articles were very hard to read. And what did FHB do? They re-released the DVD with upgraded software to ensure that the product with their name on it was on par with the high standards the company proposed to aspire to. I was almost amazed that I hadn't just wasted my $100 and a company would actually go the extra mile to make things right. Why then, does FHB continue to lag behind the times with this forum when the option to move to a vBulletin, searchable, and easy to imbed HTML format software exists? Why not nominate private individuals who already spend time here every day to Moderator status to care for the "atmosphere" that this site has developed and has not quite yet lost? This exact formula works for countless other forums I frequent and all of which produce a much better product in their respective fields with far fewer resources at their disposal than that of FHB and Taunton Press. Why not just do the right thing? Other website have galleries, homepages, blogs, buddy lists, ignore features, awesome search engines all within the forum software. Why can't you integrate your gallery into the forum and upgrade both at the same time with proven software that is available? Why is this so difficult? Thanks for your time, I hope that we are able to reach a solution before the "oldtimers" move on and leave this place to newbies and DIY'ers to pollute with misinformation and tarnish the reputation of your otherwise fine brand. Have a good day.Craig Benson
Edited 12/1/2008 9:36 pm by Haystax
Well put Mr. Benson.
I agree with keeping the pros around so this site doesn't turn into a Family Handyman type forum wehre misinformation is rampant.
I've been around the building trades for a really long time.......This whole thing is like trying to get the guy who just dropped his guts in a drywall bucket to fess up.
It ain't gonna happen guys. The reasoning is his and his alone.......you guys are not considered equals therefore any explanation forthcoming will just be appeasement or a downright lie........Give it up.....the times have changed.
JPV,
Believe it or not, there are a bunch of guys and gals who would like to work WITH you to save Breaktime and all the good it means for Taunton and for us.but to work WITH somebody takes communications. Both ways.I'm working on a theory that maybe you are stuck in a place where you can't figure out how to deal with things as they have gotten to be. Things just got out of hand and you don't know what to do now.Let me tell you a story. This goes way back in time to when all the bicycles were Schwinns and had fat tires, the girls wore bobby socks and saddle shoes, plaid skirts and sweaters, and NO body wore a damn baseball cap inside the building.I was maybe 8-10 years old, can't remember that detail for sure, maybe even 12YO, but I was riding my bicycle along and managed to fall and break my eyeglasses. No big deal, right? Well, no, not really. Except that I had taken them off my face and put them in my breast pocket.
Dad had told me to wear them
and to take care of them 'cause they were expensive.
I was really trying - I mean I thought they would be safer there than on my face for fooling around and doing active type stuff.
but I had disobeyed HIM!
He was a pretty good Dad in a lot of ways. Taught me all kinds of things and showed me how to learn more by reading and researching stuff.
But dang it all, he was hard as nails when he was disobeyed!
or when it cost him money. So I was afraid to tell him that I had broken my glasses.
So I put it off for a day
He'll be in a better mood tomorrowThen I just couldn't get myself to say anything
I'll just go read in my room tonight instead of watching TV and avoid telling him TONIGHT. That'll give me time to figure out how to tell him TOMORROW. somehow I managed to get myself worked up in a ball of nerves until I had a hard knot in my stomach that got worse and worse each day I put it off. I'd had this silly accident on a wednesday, and it took me eight whole days to work up the nerve...getting sicker and dreading it more all the time. And I couldn't see for sh!t either! I was getting a headache. Finally I marched right in and told him, "Dad, I have something to tell you,
"I fell off my bike and broke my glasses""Well son, they were a year or two old and getting too small for you anyways, so it's about time for a new pair. Did you get hurt? How's the bike?"Whew, what a RELIEF! I fessed up and got it out in the open. Man oh man that felt GOOD!!!JP, I think you are a pretty decent guy and just overwhelmed with this darn forum, stuck by management with moderating it according to the marching orders from the top Lords Of Tauntonville. The ones who get to wear the gold braid on their caps and shoulder epaulets.I'm also guessing that you are a techno-geek. You have some great skills with programing and working the software. You enjoy that, and the serenity of the cold logic there.
That's good! I don't use the work Geek as any kind of insult, just an observation of what seems to be.
But you don't feel quite so comfortable with 'folks'
They are less predictable. You can fix a runaway loop in the software but when it comes to a similar 'bug' in the forum, you are perplexed so you alternately ignore it or try the cntrl/alt/delete or sometimes the crtl/escape.But you wanna know what fixes about 9/10s of all the problems PCs have? You already know, don't you?A simple restart.Something like, "Hi, I am JPV, and I want to make this place hum right again. what can I do to get you all on board with me?"Then listen before punching too many keys. InteractMaybe even admit things that you've done that were less than pleasing to your own self. Lord Knows I have done the same - been a bad boy here and admitted that I had a part in letting things get too tense and out of hand.
No need to try to play a position - that takes far too much energy.Just be you. Not what you think "they" want you to be. That clearly isn't working.
I'll help.
Lots of us will
Whaddya tink?

"Face it, your forum software is terrible in comparison to all but the most antiquated websites around. Photo posting and tracking of messages is horrible as well."
Mr. Benson is right on here. I've only been here a short time compared to many other posters here but when I first arrived I was amazed at how behind the times the forum software was. It's like I was suddenly back in 1993. And tracking of messages IS horrible.
The only other sites I frequent regularly are running sites (example: http://www.runningtimes.com/forums/ VBulletin and user moderated but under the umbrella of Running Times magazine) and in most of them, like the example, the viewer can customize the site to view messages in either linear (the sole option on this site), threaded, or a hybrid so everyone's happy, even the guys that still prefer linear viewing. This is standard stuff anywhere but here.
C'mon FHB, as an organization that I presume thinks of itself as cutting edge, let's get with the times.
