Wanted: Farm Memorabilia

Snort's picture

My Great Grandad started this company, bought out for peanuts by Carnation in the late 70's. I'd like to get some nice bags or signs for my dad. They had plants in PA, Ohio, Fla, NC, and GA. If this is inapropriate for this site, please avert your eyes

"established 1842"?  Sold in the 70's?  Cool.  Tell us a story uncle 'snort...there's gotta be a story or two there...please?

Pretty cool, huh? My dad was pretty proud that the company made it 100 years. And stories? Ya wanna hear about about how dog feed cured a pygmy tribe in Africa, or about the guy in the Sanford, NC plant who smuggled out 20 grand's worth of bags in the early 50s? How about the 100,000 dollar bull that bought the farm by eating a roofing tack? Come sit around the fire and light me up a big spliff, children...and I'll tell you how that bull tasted;-)

Thanks, I've been looking on eBay and haven't seen either of those, can you clue me in to your search process, or do you have an "only $9.99 booklet" I can purchase? I knew this a good place to ask.

Booklet?  You don't need no stinkin' booklet.

I just do a general search, using one or two words that would be unusual, and do the search on both titles and text.  For this one, I searched on "Eshelman", and then did another search on: "Red Rose" +feed.  The quotes mean that those two words have to follow one another just like that, and then putting "+feed" after it means that "feed" has to be there too, but can appear anywhere.  I search all of eBay because you never know where a seller will put something.

You can also use minus words, like "-flower", which would eliminate any listing where "red rose" was a flower instead of a brand name.

It's hard to search with general terms, like "feed bag" or "farm animal", because you get way too many responses and most of them have nothing to do with what you're looking for.

OK, that's about all I know.  Now take that $9.99 and bid on something!

Billy:

Uncovered a steel cow yoke the other week cleaning out a junk pile and left it leaning against the barn rather than putting it in the scrap pile. (Oval ring 10 inches wide and 4 ft high for retaining cows during milking for the city folk, other names in other places also).

Anyway, since you are a regular, if your dad is also interested in dairy hardware and yo want it I'll send to you for the shipping cost. (I'm in Renton, WA)

I do appreciate the offer, but my dad's more into the dairy software, cotton feed bags, udders...but a nice steel sign would set him off...thanks again)

I don't know if you're still looking, but there are a couple more auctions you might be interested in.  The sign is gorgeous, and no one has bid on it.  At the beginning bid price, a person might have to take a second out on their house to buy it, though!

Woah, those be my sentiments exactly. That baby's definitley pretty, but no bids yet? I've got to get the rest of the family (6) in on this case...and, thanks to you, I'm holding a sweet bag and some strange pamphlets. Pop will be very happy. A tip of the hat to you!
